Crafting: Hairpins

These hairpins and combs are inspired by the hair ornaments worn by women in East Asia in ancient times. They may also share similarities with hair ornaments worn in other parts of the globe as well.

The many styles that the hair ornaments were/are worn in and the materials or colors can be sign of a woman's social status, marital status, age, profession, region, family or clan affiliation (by birth or marriage).

Many women of today wear modernized and traditional versions of the various hairpins and combs whether as an accent of their everyday wear in tribute to their heritage or in combination with their traditional garments for ceremonies and events.
